The Supreme Court on Friday refused to extend the duration of his BS4, giving a tremendous blow to the auto industry. The Association of Car Manufacturers and Auto Dealers filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking extension of the deadline for the sale of BS4 vehicles.

The new emission standard BS6 is scheduled to come into force in the country from April 1, 2020. After their implementation, registration of BS4 vehicles in the country will stop. Due to the sluggishness in the auto sector, auto companies and dealers have a significant inventory of BS4 vehicles, for which companies are offering discounts of millions of rupees for the sale.

Stay on the streets for 15 years

However, the government has made it clear that all the BS4 vehicles registered before 31 March 2020 will be able to walk on the roads for 15 years and will not be removed before that. At the same time, the government also postponed the decision to increase the registration fees of vehicles till June 2020. In the draft notification issued on 24 July 2019, the government had proposed to increase the registration fees of new trains by 10 to 20 times.

Companies stop booking BS4 vehicles

Despite this, there was no speed in the sale of its vehicles. At the same time, companies also had to decide to close the plant several times to limit the production of vehicles and manage the inventory. However, many companies are busy upgrading their vehicles to BS6. Maruti started upgrading its vehicles from last year and till date more than 11 vehicles have been upgraded with new engines. At the same time, Honda announced last year that it will send BS6 vehicles instead of BS4 to dealers from the new year. The company has also stopped taking bookings of BS4 vehicles and has started upgrading.

But the court on Friday refused to extend the sale date, dismissing his plea during the hearing. The automobile companies had said in their petition that they would stop production of BS4 vehicles before the expiry of the deadline, but they should be given a grace period of six months to finish their stock. Earlier, in 2016, the central government had announced that BS6 standards would be implemented by 2020, going beyond BS5 standards.
